On Saturday 24th March 2007, the choir staged a joint concert with Holywell Brass Band at Denbigh Town Hall. The concert came about as a result of both the choir and band taking part in the ‘Glory Of Wales’ fireworks and music extravaganza held at Howells School, Denbigh in September 2005. During the two day event discussions took place as to the possibility of arranging a joint concert but, with the existing commitments of both the band and the choir it took until March 2007 to come to fruition.
Holywell Band was formed over 100 years ago and is currently enjoying huge success. Since 1998 they have been promoted from section 4 to Section 2 of the National Brass Bans Association, and winning 1st prize at the North west Brass Band Championships at the Guildhall Preston In January 2007. The band won 1st prize at the North Wales Annual Contest and also scooped the top prize for being the most entertaining band of all sections at the North Wales Open Entertainment Contest. The bands' conductor, Gareth Thomas, is a native of Rhosllanerchrugog and has been conducting bands for over 40 years. Amongst the bands he has conducted are Rhyl Silver Band; Royal Buckley Town Band, Northop; Point Of Ayr; Kirton; RAF Cranwell and the Royal Artillery Band, Woolwich.
Amongst the pieces performed by the band were ‘Miller Magic’ a medley of well known Glen Miller songs; ‘I Will Follow Him’, a brass band arrangement of the well known song from the film Sister Act; ‘David Of The White Rock’ and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. The band finished their two sessions with ‘Sneewaltzer’, during which Gareth Thomas had the audience jumping up and down and waving their hands in time with the music!
In their sessions the Choir performed ‘Y Ddau Wladgarwr’; ‘Ti a dy Ddoniau’; ‘Finlandia’; ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’; ‘Cadwyn Cymraeg’, ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and African Prayer’. The choir were joined by the guest soloist, Geraint Roberts, who performed ‘O Isis & Osiris’ and ‘I’se Weary O’ Waitin’ with them. Geraint is a well known Bass soloist and was a founder member of the Gwalia Singers.
The concert finished with the band and choir joining together to perform ‘Gogoniant Dduw’ and finally ‘Gwahoddiad’ .
The Guests Of Honour at the concert were The Mayor and Mayoress of Denbigh, Councillor Raymond Bartley and Mrs Dorothy Bartley. In addition it was very pleasing to have our President, Gwyn Dryhurst-Dodd, and our two Vice-Presidents, Meg Mullock and Professor Robert Sells, in attendance. The choir appreciates your loyal support.
A social get together was held at Denbigh Rugby Club after the concert with a splendid buffet having been prepared by the choir wives.
A further joint concert between the band and choir is to be held on 20th October 2007. The venue has not been finalised yet but details will be included on our Diary page in due course. That again will be a concert not to be missed.
